Local Green Party County Council Candidate, Mike Shone, On BBC TV’s Politics Show
Mike Shone reinforced the Green Party’s commitment to tackling local government spending waste when he featured on the Midlands slot of BBC TV’s Politics Show on Sunday.
Mike outlined how ill-thought-out spending had deprived both young and old of much-needed services in Stafford. The former Mayor of Stafford said of particular concern was the council’s decision to leave a cluster of ex-police houses at Baswich empty at a time when affordable and social housing was in massive demand.
“At a time when there is such a shortage of affordable homes and long housing association waiting lists, this is appalling.”
Mike also told BBC presenter Patrick Burns: “We are very keen at the moment to be looking at allowances nationally. We can ook at them locally; the 62 members claimed and got nearly a million pounds last year in allowances and expenses.”

Greens’ Top Euro Hopeful visits Stafford
Felicity
Norman, Green MEP Candidate for Stafford joined with former
Mayor, Mike Shone (Green Party candidate for Stafford South
East), and other Green campaigners on a tour of the area. The
visit included a stop at the former Staffordshire Police site
off the Cannock Road. The site which includes Baswich House lies
in the middle of the two areas of town so could be a site
suitable for community facilities as well as housing. Alas since
the visit the police, despite local opposition, have now begun
to demolish these community buildings.
At the end of the tour Stafford Greens echoed residents’ calls for more youth facilities in Stafford.
Green Party campaigners in recent weeks have spoken to residents about their main concerns in the area and what they would like to see the Greens working on to make their lives better. Youth facilities has appeared as one of the top priorities in the area.
Greens will campaign for Staffordshire County Council to consider a youth and community centre for the area and other measures to support young people in the area.
The tour also included visits to local green enterprise such as Stafford based Back2Bikes.
