Local Green Party County Council Candidate, Mike Shone, On BBC TV’s Politics Show

Mike Shone reinforced the Green Party’s commitment to tackling local government spending waste when he featured on the Midlands slot of BBC TV’s Politics Show on Sunday.

Mike outlined how ill-thought-out spending had deprived both young and old of much-needed services in Stafford. The former Mayor of Stafford said of particular concern was the council’s decision to leave a cluster of ex-police houses at Baswich empty at a time when affordable and social housing was in massive demand.

“At a time when there is such a shortage of affordable homes and long housing association waiting lists, this is appalling.

Mike also told BBC presenter Patrick Burns: “We are very keen at the moment to be looking at allowances nationally. We can ook at them locally; the 62 members claimed and got nearly a million pounds last year in allowances and expenses.

Greens’ Top Euro Hopeful visits Stafford

Felicity Norman, Green MEP Candidate for Stafford joined with former Mayor, Mike Shone (Green Party candidate for Stafford South East), and other Green campaigners on a tour of the area. The visit included a stop at the former Staffordshire Police site off the Cannock Road. The site which includes Baswich House lies in the middle of the two areas of town so could be a site suitable for community facilities as well as housing. Alas since the visit the police, despite local opposition, have now begun to demolish these community buildings. (More)

At the end of the tour Stafford Greens echoed residents’ calls for more youth facilities in Stafford.

100 months to Save the Planet ... 91 Months left

In August 2008 the New Economic Foundation warned that, unless we make real changes, we have 100 months until the climate balance tips irrecoverably into chaos.

What they did? - Go to this page each month where we will list the significant actions (if any) national and local government have made toward averting climate chaos:

Say No To Another Waste Incinerator in Staffordshire

Waste Management is a burning issue!

Plans are underway to construct a giant incinerator, at Four Ashes, that will require 300,000 tonnes of rubbish per year to operate yet we only produce 150,000 tonnes of rubbish per year and that figure is falling as recycling is increasing. The bottom line is that if this incinerator goes ahead Staffordshire County Council will be legally bound to ensure that the public/private company running the incinerator is supplied with enough fuel.

The alternative is a 'zero waste' strategy. (MORE)

Green New Deal

The Green Party remain concerned that policymakers pay only lip service to the severity of this economic crisis. The measures that have been most fulsomely advocated are either wrong-headed or half-hearted. Radical action might be advocated, but its end is the preservation of the status quo.

It is the Green Party's conclusion that the answer to our present crisis, widely recognised as the worst since 1929, is nothing less than a Green New Deal. Such a Green New Deal approach would help tackle the financial crisis and because it would reduce the use of fossil fuels; it would increase our energy security and independence and help tackle climate change whilst creating millions of jobs.

Welfare Reform

Welfare must be about Economic Empowerment NOT A Poverty trap!

At a time when many people are being unemployed by the depression the Governments response is to cut the welfare state!

“The gap between rich and poor is at its highest level for more than 40 years. This is not just a moral crime, but also a wicked economic waste.” (MORE)

Clean Up Politics

Britain's Green Party MEPs were ranked above the groups of all other British parties on transparency, accountability, democracy and waste by campaign group Open Europe.  Caroline Lucas MEP, leader of the Green Party, has been rated best British MEP on this basis. (More)
